As it is well known the area is the most ideal for growing early vegetables. Indeed, the cultivation of watermelon in my area is the earliest in Europe. It began in the 80s and until 1989 to early 90s exports were mainly done to Italy. The last decade exports are held all over Europe. Due to the reduce of domestic watermelon consumption in the recent years and the increase of demand outside of Greece, the market has grown scientifically. Local producers take advantage of the Internet in search of new markets.

The microclimate, the excellent soil and climatic conditions for growing early watermelons, the experience and especially the hard work played a key role in the development of crop. First of all , the soil is sandy loam with high sand content and gets drained easily, which helps soil management in an environmentally friendly way. Our fields either being in the former Lake Mouria either bordering. The result in this is that the fields are rich in organic elements and by adding organic fertilizers our watermelons become very tasty.

The help of the “Greek” sun that hits the fields are very important for the development of our culture. The pest control is done using plastic and milling without pesticides, while fungal diseases treated with water management, proper nutrition and the use of balanced fertilizer.
